work together, learn together: consciously collaborate
Collaboration is at the heart
of life and work
If we want to come together, envision a better future, create and navigate change, and have a positive lasting impact in the world, we need to collaborate intentionally and skilfully.
And yet, as individuals, teams and organisations, collaboration is not often something we just know how to do well or encouraged to pay close attention to.
We learn as we go, and we establish patterns, often unseen, that don't always serve our purpose best, especially over time and as context shifts.
If we invest in conscious collaboration we can unleash all the power of connection, co-creation, community and change that working and learning together offers.
Isn't all collaboration conscious?
To some extent, yes. To a greater extent, no.
Instinctively we understand that we aren't designed to deal with work or life, involving any degree of complexity, in isolation. We all live and work in some version of a group or collective. We need each other.
We seek each other out. No one can do it alone.
Collaboration is in our DNA. It’s as simple as that.
Collaboration is the source code for community.
Collaboration requires truly valuing diversity and creating the space for all the differences people bring.
Collaboration enables adaptability and change.
At its best, it frees us to be fully human in our life and work.
Yet, in many contexts, we've been led to believe we must be independent, self-sufficient and even relentlessly competitive to succeed. And we've learned these lessons well. They're a hard habit to break.
This is to say that collaboration isn't always conscious, but when it is, it's a powerful force
The shape it takes when it is conscious
At the core of it all lies an appreciative, creative, and developmental approach.
We build on existing strengths to take on challenges.
We activate innovation and problem-solving to co-create a new reality.
We learn as we go so that we can do things differently and adapt.
We nurture relationships so that we can ride the waves of change, supported and together.
Some learning is integral to everything we do. It's the key.
Learning makes the difference. Learning is the difference.
It catalyses change by envisioning a different way.
It creates change through commitment to action and behavioural shifts.
It sustains change by enabling ongoing evolution.
As an organisational and leadership development consultant, facilitator, coach and mentor, I believe impactful collaboration goes beyond simply working together because we happen to be in the same space at the same time or have a mandate to do so.
I trust we can do better than that.
I know we can do better than that.
If you do too, I would love to work with you.
